Cancer is now the leading cause of firefighter line-of-duty deaths. Early detection saves lives.

The Greatest Risk Firefighters Face Isn’t Always on the Fireground!

At Firefighter Cancer Screening U.S.A., we’re changing the way firefighters fight their toughest battle, cancer. As a firefighter-owned company with EMS physician-led medical oversight, we bring the Galleri® multi-cancer early detection test directly to your station. With one simple blood draw, we can screen for signals from over 50 types of cancer, many with no standard screenings today. It’s fast, confidential, and built around the firefighter schedule, because protecting those who protect us starts with protecting their health.

Who Should Be Screened

Guidelines from Leading Sources:

  • IAFF (International Association of Fire Fighters):

-Recommends baseline cancer screenings after 10 years of service.

-Advocates for inclusion of multi-cancer screening in annual firefighter wellness exams.

  • NFPA 1582 (Standard on Comprehensive Occupational Medical Program for Fire Departments):

-Suggests cancer risk screening for firefighters age 40 and older, or age 35+ with a family history or high exposure.

  • Firefighter Cancer Support Network (FCSN):

-Recommends annual medical evaluations beginning at age 40.

-Emphasizes earlier action if occupational exposures are high or family history is positive.

⚠️ Individual Risk Matters:

-Firefighters with the following risk factors should consider earlier or more frequent screening:

-Family history of cancer

-Known exposure to PFAS, diesel exhaust, asbestos, or burning synthetics

-History of suppressed immune function or chronic inflammation

Early detection saves lives. With proactive cancer screening, we can safeguard the health of those who risk everything to keep our communities safe.

Cancer Screening: Protecting Firefighters Beyond the Call

The Hidden Risk of Firefighting

Firefighters face occupational exposures to smoke, toxins, and carcinogens that significantly increase their lifetime risk of developing cancer. Studies show that firefighters are diagnosed with certain cancers at higher rates and often at younger ages than the general population.

Why Early Detection Matters

Catching cancer early can make a life-saving difference. Many cancers are more treatable, and survival rates are higher when identified in their earliest stages. For firefighters, proactive screening offers peace of mind and the chance to address health concerns before symptoms appear.

Protecting Those Who Protect Us

Cancer is now the leading cause of line-of-duty deaths among firefighters. By incorporating regular cancer screenings into departmental health and wellness programs, we can help reduce this risk, extend careers, and protect the people who dedicate their lives to protecting our communities.

Commitment to Firefighter Wellness

Firefighter Cancer Screening U.S.A. is dedicated to providing access to advanced tools like the Galleri® multi-cancer early detection test. With flexible scheduling, on-site testing options, and clinical oversight, we ensure firefighters receive the screenings they deserve in a safe, confidential, and supportive environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the Galleri test and how does it work?

The Galleri test is a simple blood draw designed to screen for a cancer “signal” across over 50 types of cancer, including many that currently lack routine screening options. It detects DNA fragments (cell-free DNA) from potential cancer cells and analyzes their methylation patterns using advanced machine learning to identify possible cancer and its likely origin.

2. Why is multi-cancer early detection important for firefighters?

Firefighters are at an elevated risk for many types of cancer due to chronic exposure to carcinogens on the job. The Galleri test offers a proactive tool to detect potential cancer signals from over 50 types of cancer—many of which don’t have standard screening methods. Early detection supports better outcomes, faster intervention, and reduced downtime, helping protect both health and careers.

3. What do my test results mean?

"No Cancer Signal Detected": No cancer-related DNA was found in the blood. While this result applies to nearly 99% of tested individuals, it does not guarantee absence of cancer. Routine cancer screenings should continue.

"Cancer Signal Detected": A signal was found and the test may indicate the likely tissue or organ involved. This is not a diagnosis—further follow-up, such as imaging or lab tests, is required to confirm whether cancer is present.

4. How accurate is the test?

The Galleri test boasts a specificity of approximately 99.5%, meaning false positives are very uncommon.

The positive predictive value (PPV)—the likelihood a detected signal corresponds to an actual cancer—is about 73% based on recent Mayo Clinic studies, meaning not all positive results indicate cancer.

Sensitivity (the ability to detect cancer) increases with cancer stage—low in early stages and substantially higher in later stages. For some cancers like liver or bile duct cancer, sensitivity is over 90%; for many early-stage cancers, sensitivity is lower.

5. How can fire departments access the Galleri test for their personnel, and what are the costs?

Fire departments can integrate the Galleri multi-cancer early detection test into their annual health and wellness screenings by partnering with Firefighter Cancer Screening U.S.A. The test is available by prescription and involves a simple blood draw that can be coordinated on-site or at a designated clinic.

Pricing for departments is available through group health agreements, with volume-based discounts and corporate wellness packages. While the standard retail cost is $949 per individual, organizations may be eligible for reduced rates, flexible billing, and the option to apply HSA/FSA funds or seek reimbursement through employer-sponsored benefits.

Our team helps streamline onboarding, testing logistics, and provider coordination to ensure compliance, privacy, and clinical follow-up for all participants.
